Quality meat, professional service and real knowledge are words synonymous with one of Wellington’s most well established retail businesses, Preston’s Master Butchers. A family tradition, General Manager Andrew Preston, is the fourth generation member in the business. Today, time honoured recipes from Andrew’s great Grandfather are still used in the production of Preston’s products.

Preston’s Master Butchers prides itself on supplying products to meet all markets and budgets, where quality is always the ultimate end goal. Keeping an eye on the quality process begins well before the product is presented for consumers to purchase. In some circumstances, selected stock is raised on local and Wairarapa farms under a watchful eye, before being processed at their local Ngauranga abattoir, Taylor Preston.

The product range is extensive and includes varied cuts/preparations of beef, pork, lamb, chicken and also complementary grocery items of dairy, frozen vegetables, condiments and wines. The delicatessen is particularly impressive and offers a plethora of ready to eat meals, selected cheeses and continental cuts. It wouldn’t be a true Wellington retailer if you couldn’t also get your daily caffeine fix with a freshly brewed latte from their Wellington and Porirua stores.
Preston’s operate from three branches – Wellington, Porirua and Palmerston North, and a processing factory also in Porirua. They employ a team of over 80 employees, some of whom have been with the company for 30 years.

The Preston recipe for success is a combination of following tradition and history whilst continually assessing their future direction to keep up with changing market needs.

Preston’s provide an honest quality of product. This means they present various grades and price it accordingly, unlike a supermarket where product is often grouped under one tiered per kilogram price. The quantity options are vast and cater for single serve meals through to great value bulk catering packs. Pre-packaged product allows customers to select their own cut of meat, or they can take advantage of the ‘serve over’ where special requirements for specific cuts can be met, just like the good old days. Many more customers are wanting that special service, and knowledge that they are getting quality for their money. You can be assured of a fresh product when you purchase from Preston’s, with products arriving fresh, directly from the various suppliers.

The product range is always being refined with new additions and enhancements to the current offerings. For example, in the past two years the company has focused on enhancing its continental smallgoods range with European inspired recipes and techniques. Favourites always have their place at Preston’s too and their time honoured recipe for Cumberland ham is fiercely protected and is a popular choice during the Christmas season.

The retail environment is one of the best you’ll find in the food industry. Product is well laid out in purpose designed chillers so it’s easy to get the inspiration to cook tonight’s meal for the family or entertain friends over a dinner party. Preston’s Master Butchers are always available to advise on suitable preparation and cooking methods. The atmosphere is unique and can be likened to going to a foodie fair on days where staff provide free tasting sessions to educate customers on meal options. The walls are attractively decorated exhibition style with photographs depicting the history of the family business. The tradition aspect of the brand is represented through the use of black and white photographs and the logo representing the bowler hat worn by the company’s founding father, A.E Preston.

Preston’s acknowledge loyal customers with a Club Card scheme which provides exclusive offers, weekly prize draws and a saver system for Christmas purchases.

Preston’s has a strong involvement in the local community. Sponsorship activities have included the Wellington NZI International Sevens, Wellington Pulse Netball team, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Cancer Society as well as the varied local school and sports fundraisers.

The company sets high standards in customer service and it has always been a goal for their employees to have their focus in this area publicly acknowledged. In 2010, both Wellington branches of Preston’s, were finalists in the Wellington Top Shop Awards, with the Wellington branch receiving second runner up in their category. The last time the awards were held in Wellington, the Porirua branch won the category for Excellence in Outstanding Customer Service. A fantastic result for a retail butchery to achieve in such a broad and competitive retail environment.

Preston’s are not afraid to put their products under the line of professional scrutiny from industry peers. Annual meat product awards provide a great opportunity for Preston’s to put forward well loved products to compete against the country’s finest – and they’ve enjoyed a fair bit of success too, regularly winning gold, silver and bronze medals. Accolades in 2010 include: 100% NZ Bacon Awards (run by NZ Pork) - Gold Award for Shoulder Bacon and Silver Award for Middle Bacon 2010. 2010 Great NZ Sausage Competition (run by Retail Meat NZ), Silver Award for Cumberland Pre-Cook Sausage, Silver Award in the International Bratwurst category with Anytime Turingia Pre-Cooked Bratwurst. And once again, finalist with their Ted’s Choice Angus Beef, Steak of Origin Competition (run by Retail meat NZ, judging the best steak in the country).

The branding and marketing message shared by Preston’s originates from the company’s founding father. Arthur Edward Preston was a family man and stressed the importance of meal time being a family affair. With today’s marketing medians dominated by fast food adverts, it’s refreshing to see Preston’s being socially responsibly and still promoting the value in sharing home cooked family meals using the freshest of products.
